Novak Djokovic continues to dominate the action at the Australian Open.
In a dominant performance Sunday in Melbourne, Djokovic cut down Daniil Medvedev with a 7-5, 6-2, 6-2 victory to claim his ninth career Australian Open championship.
The win also puts Djokovic at 18 Grand Slam singles titles in his career, just two behind Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal for the most all-time men’s singles championships.
Medvedev fought off an early break in the first set, which was tied at 5-all before Djokovic held at love and then broke Medvedev.
There were several lengthy exchanges at the baseline that lasted at least 10 strokes in the opening set, and Djokovic held an 8-5 advantage on those points.
Medvedev then destroyed his racket by spiking it to the court after missing a return to fall behind 5-2 in the second set. He had broken to begin that set but Djokovic then reeled off four games in a row to take control of the match.
